What the Press is Saying

Excerpts From 19 Years of Publicity
Los Angeles Magazine, January 2001
"Salvation Armani"
By Elizabeth Kaye

"Maureen Clavin's stated goal of creating a hospitable atmosphere manifests in bowls of candy, complimentary coffee, quarters for the parking meter, and attentive sales personnel carefully trained in the delicate skills of greeting customers and, as Clavin puts it, 'listening to their wants and needs.' Everyone benefits at The AdDress. For the celebrities unwilling to be seen in the same dress twice, for the deposed princess currently residing in a penthouse above Wilshire Boulevard, for the grand lady from the east who winters at the Hotel Bel-Air and sends her driver to the store with masses of clothes packed in quilted boxes, there's the satisfaction of knowing that nothing is wasted. Finally, there's the money that arrives shortly after The AdDress's books are reviewed on the 10th of each month. "There isn't a person I buy from who doesn't love getting checks."

"Great Finds"

"If you want to pay full price at Neiman Marcus or Saks, go right ahead. But first, consider this: an Emanuel Ungaro Parallele dress with the original $1,650 price tag is just $148 at The AdDress. This serious shopper's secret carries new and resale designer fashions. But it is the resale merchandise and steals like that Ungaro dress that earn The AdDress the loyalty of the city's best-dressed women. Best of all, you can justify a larger booty because you're saving so much"

This just in: "Boutique is the address for Charity"
by Kelly Carter

SANTA MONICA, Calif, - Thou Shalt Not Wear the Same Fancy Outfit Twice might as well be the 11th commandment in fashion-conscious Hollywood. Rather than sin, female stars have found a way to not only keep their closets fresh, but help their favorite charity.

"What a wonderful way to pass on things that you no longer need to others whose need is greater," says Stefanie Powers, whose clothes benefit the William Holden wildlife foundation, of which she is president.

A fuschia gown belonging to Powers is currently on sale in the boutique for $175, and the Badgley-Mischka gown Victoria Principal wore to last fall’s Carousel of Hope ball has a price tag of $1,495.

Oftentimes, wives of writers, producers and directors head to The AdDress Boutique to get a dress for an awards show. Clavin won’t say who they are, but she says that every once in a while, she has a celebrity shopper, too.

"Everybody likes a bargain," she says.

"Sharon Stone’s Dress"

Where you’ve seen it: On the cover of InStyle (October 1998)

Where is it now? Actress Tamara Olson, 25, bought it in a shop in Los Angeles for $300. Estimated Value: $3000

‘Tamara bought the dress in one of Los Angeles’ best known celebrity resale shops, The AdDress Boutique….Owner Maureen Clavin saw Sharon Stone eating lunch at an LA restaurant and, as she has done with hundreds of stars, she approached her. ‘I told her I ran a consignment clothes store and, when stars are clearing out their wardrobes, many like to pass on their clothes to me because I donate a portion of the sale price to charity. She smiled, and took my card.'

‘Just when you thought you’d heard the last of Zsa Zsa Gabor’s ordeal, here comes another volley. To whit: The floral dress she was wearing on the day she was arrested is for sale at The AdDress, a shop in Santa Monica that specializes in new and used clothing. The brilliant pink-and-yellow floral print, full-skirted dress has a sleeveless black bodice and matching floral print bolero jacket."

The asking price for this moment of history was $500. All proceeds were donated to the Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

"Resale Can Be Very Chic"

‘With its white sleek decor, glass skylight, mirrored walls and floral arrangements, The AdDress provides an attractive backdrop for some of the latest resale fashions in town… Most of the top designer names are well represented here, whether they come from a major star’s closet or from one of Maureen’s buying trips to the world’s fashion capitals. New stock is added almost daily. While customers are browsing, they will be offered wine, champagne, coffee and cheeses in a setting of contemporary California architecture.’
